Debate in the U.S. Senate over federal funding of embryonic stem cell research reveals a deep divide in personal religious beliefs and the theology of when life begins.

The five senators who are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all have come out in favor of spending federal money to study whether cells taken from embryos in the first stages of development can be used to cure such problems as heart disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, cancer and diabetes.

The Mormon senators' stand is controversial because the collection of these cells would require the destruction of excess embryos produced at fertility clinics…The Mormon senators "have helped move the debate away from right-to-life absolutism without sacrificing pro-life theology.

The LDS Church, not the Vatican, is playing the pivotal role in the struggle over stem cells," according to an analysis by Drew Clark in the Aug. 2 edition of Slate Magazine. Central to the Senate debate is the question of when life begins.

…"There is No Direct Revelation upon the subject of when the spirit enters the body," (LDS) church spokesman Dale Bills said this week.
…Church leaders have not said whether this joining of spirit and body occurs at conception or sometime later in the development of the fetus.
On the issue of embryonic stem cell research, LDS Church leaders issued a statement last month saying they had no position but added the idea "merits cautious scrutiny."

Kimball, who said:... “the time is coming when we will be mixed up in these now peaceful valleys to that extent that it will be difficult to tell the face of a Saint from the face of an enemy to the people of God. Then, brethren look out for the great sieve, for there will be a great sifting time, and many will fall; for I say unto you there is a test, a Test, a TEST coming." To be a Watchman on the Tower unto the people is no small assignment. It carries with it a tremendous responsibility to warn the people of impending calamities if they refuse to alter their downward course. I quote from Ezekiel in the old Testament.

A newly published compilation of LDS guidelines — used by all church leaders worldwide when dealing with their members — has softened the language about gay Mormons.

The book, known as the Church Handbook of Instructions, lays out the Utah-based faith’s policies on everything from baptism to running a worship service to counseling troubled marriage partners.

… Like most recent LDS Church statements, this new handbook makes a clear distinction between same-sex orientation and behavior. It eliminates the suggestion, mentioned in the previous 2006 edition, that same-sex relationships “distort loving relationships” and that gays should repent of their “homosexual thoughts or feelings.”

It also says that celibate gay Mormons who are “worthy and qualified in every other way” should be allowed to have “callings,” or church assignments, and to participate fully in temple rituals.

be peace. The Most Reverend John C. Wester, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City, also spoke. He was followed by the Salt Lake Scots Bagpipe Band performing “Highland Cathedral” and “Amazing Grace.” Members of the Sikh faith and Gnostics were part of the performance for the first time this year. “Interfaith is not about losing faith; it’s about strengthening your own faith,” said Alan Bachman, music chair for the performance and Jewish representative to the roundtable.
He compared different faiths to different notes and explained that only when your own note is strong can you harmonize with another note and make beautiful music. “That’s what will make the world work.”

The Interfaith Roundtable is not only dedicated to celebrating different faiths, but also different cultures. The Young Artists of China – Inner Mongolian Musicians opened the program with Chinese traditional music. Later, the Inner Mongolian Dancers performed, each balancing five rice bowls on their heads as they danced across the stage. Chinese culture was also celebrated through the CCTV Galaxy Children’s Choir from Beijing, who sang “Flowers of Friendship” and “Beijing Welcomes You.” These children also performed the latter piece at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Other performances included songs from the Gnostic, Jewish and Baha’i faiths, a Buddhist recitation, Sikh temple chant, reading from the Qur’an, Hindu and Buddhist dancers, and a few numbers the audience was invited to stand and sing with the children’s choir. The performance concluded with a Greek Orthodox prayer. “It takes a year of preparation. We will start next week for 2011,” Elaine Emmi, a Quaker and past chair of the Interfaith Roundtable, explained. All organizers and participants for the roundtable and its events are volunteers. “It has been awesome to step back and see the community step forward,” said Jan Saeed of the Baha’i faith and the original chair of the roundtable. She also said it is the spirit of volunteerism that is so important to bringing people together and that is what helps make these efforts successful. The Salt Lake Interfaith Roundtable was organized in conjunction with the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in order to provide religious support for athletes from all over the world. The group chose to continue their work after the conclusion of the Olympics to promote harmony and understanding. Interfaith week has expanded, even lasting a bit longer than a week, with events such as a food drive, a presentation at the state capitol honoring Presidents Day: Faith of our Founding Fathers and several other events to bring understanding of different religions.
The roundtable is dedicated to celebrating religions and cultures and building love, harmony and faith.

They wore burgundy robes, clerical collars, Indian feathers, yarmulkes or suits. Some spoke Arabic, Hebrew or English with a Catholic Irish lilt. But speakers at Sunday night's Thanksgiving Interfaith Service offered the same message to the nearly 500 people meeting at the Masonic Temple in downtown Salt Lake City: God loves everyone so we should love each other.
…LDS Apostle M. Russell Ballard described seeing a tiny mustard seed in the Holy Land and realizing that "if we have faith, nothing that faces us as a country, or as individuals, churches or employees will defeat us." …The Rev. Michael Kouremetis of Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church read Abraham Lincoln's Thanksgiving Proclamation and reminded the audience to "reach out and embrace each other in this frail world."
Imam Muhammed Mehta, of the Islamic Society of Greater Salt Lake, pointed out that every faith tradition teaches some form of goodness, charity, kindness and care for the weak and fragile.

Finally, Father Matthew Wixted, a longtime Catholic chaplain at the former Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City, noted that no one escapes this life without some sorrow. "People of all faiths and no faith are on common ground," Wixted said. "We must bear each other's burdens."
Across town in Holladay, nearly 1,000 people squeezed into St. Vincent's Catholic Church for a similar interfaith service.
The first "Thanksgiving" was recorded in the biblical book of Deuteronomy about 1,400 years ago, the Rev. France Davis of Calvary Baptist Church told the combined Catholic, LDS, Protestant, and Jewish audience. "It is not an American holiday. Newly named LDS Church President Thomas S. Monson told reporters on Monday there will be no abrupt change in the faith's initiatives or outreach throughout the world, and the church will continue to work cooperatively with people of other faiths.

President Henry B. Eyring and President Dieter F. Uchtdorf were named as first and second counselors, respectively, in the First Presidency, filing into the building's main lobby behind President Monson to the clicking of cameras, as speculation about who would comprise the new presiding body of the church was put to rest. President Uchtdorf said his wife told him he doesn't have to worry about his accent, because more than half of the church's members speak with something other than an English accent. He said the faith is more than global, "it's a universal church" that has the power to "combine and unite and bring ALL nations and ethnic groups together."

…She was only six weeks pregnant when she told her first legislative colleague, Sen. Howard Stephenson, a Republican from Draper with whom she served on the revenue and taxation interim committee. Since that day, Stephenson has periodically brought Johnson eggs from his chickens. "I thought it might be helpful for the nutrition of the baby," he explains.
Stephenson is a conservative man. You can hear the hesitation in his voice when he is asked to talk about the potential reaction of his colleagues to Johnson's pregnancy. But he is clear about his own feelings: "I'm not one to judge other people, but I do respect any woman who will carry and bear a child for a childless couple." He adds, "I have my own standards and beliefs, but I don't want to impose them on another person. … I don't want to impose my judgment on Christine or the couple that is receiving the baby."

In 2003, when he attended the Giant in our City award given to then-LDS Church president Gordon B. Hinckley, he was seated next to Congregation Kol Ami Rabbi Tracee Rosen and her gay partner. "She told us of her admiration and respect and love for President Hinckley," Stephenson remembers. "And she said HE contacted her Personally to make sure both she and her partner would attend. When I heard that, I thought 'Should I take a lesson from the way a prophet of the church treats gay people?' Frankly, that has changed my approach to how I interact with gay people and gay legislators."

When members of San Francisco’s LDS Bay Ward want to meet with the bishop, they’ll call Mitch Mayne… On Sunday, Mayne was installed in a highly visible role as the bishop’s "executive secretary," assisting the local LDS leader in virtually every task. Mayne is openly gay — a fact that has created a buzz up and down the Mormon Internet world. He is not the first self-identified gay member to hold a key leadership position within the LDS Church’s all-volunteer clergy and staffing. A Seattle ward (congregation), for example, reportedly had a gay counselor to the bishop and in Oakland, Calif., a gay man is on the stake’s high council and is a temple worker…"I was pretty shocked when the bishop [Don Fletcher] asked me," Mayne said this week. "I never expected to be in a leadership role. Can the Prophet be EXCOMMUNICATED?

AVERAGE JOE CHURCH MAINSTREAM MORMON CANNOT BELIEVE THIS COULD HAPPEN: Why would God include his Prophet? I thought the prophet was Infallible? I Thought that God would take his life to protect the church? Why would the Lord have a prophet who could TRANSGRESS?

“I told the (LDS) people that if they would not believe the revelations that God had given, He (The LORD) would suffer the devil to give revelations, Have I seen this fulfilled? I have. I told the (LDS) people that as true as God lived, if they (LDS) would NOT have truth, they (LDS) would have error sent unto them and they (LDS) would believe it." “…and if He (The LORD) should suffer him (Joseph Smith) to lead the people astray, it would be because they ought to be led astray. If He should suffer them to be chastised, and some of them destroyed, it would be because they deserved it….” Brigham Young (J.D. 4:297-298)

Let every man and woman know, by the whispering of the spirit of God to themselves, whether their leaders are walking in the paths the Lord dictates or not.”( Disc. of B.Y., p.209 / Journal of Disc. Joseph Smith said it best: “We have heard men who hold the priesthood remark that they would do anything they were told to do by those who preside over them (even) if they knew it was wrong; but such obedience as this is worse than folly to us; it is slavery in the extreme; and the man who would thus willingly degrade himself, should not claim a rank among intelligent beings, until he turns from his folly.
A man of God would despise the idea. Others, in the extreme exercise of their almighty authority have taught that such obedience was necessary, and that no matter what the saints were told to do by their presidents, they should do it without any questions. When Elders of Israel will so far indulge in these extreme notions of obedience as to teach them to the people, it is generally because they have it in their hearts to do wrong themselves. WHO are the salt of the earth?

When men are called unto mine everlasting gospel, and covenant with an everlasting covenant, they (LDS) are accounted as the salt of the earth and the savor of men; (D&C 101:39)
But inasmuch as they (LDS) keep not my commandments, and hearken not to observe all my words, the kingdoms of the world shall prevail against them. For they (LDS) were set to be a light unto the world, and to be the saviors of men; And inasmuch as they (LDS) are not the saviors of men, they (LDS) are as salt that has lost its savor, and is thenceforth good for nothing but to be cast out and trodden under foot of men. (D&C 103:8-10)

On Imposters Joseph Smith said, “If any man writes to you or preaches to you, doctrines contrary to the Bible, the Book of Mormon, or the Doctrine and Covenants, set him down as an imposter.” (T&S, Vol. 5, No. 7, p.490, April. 1, 1844)

Brigham Young in his last public address to the Saints, he said: “O Latter-day Saints !
Why don’t you see, why don’t you open your eyes and behold the great work resting upon you and that you have enter into? You are blind, you are stupid, you are in the dark,
in the mist and fog, wondering to and fro like a boat upon the water without sail, rudder or oar, and you know not whither you are going.” -Aug. 19, 1877 (J. of D. 19:93-94)

Again Brigham Young said: “If a Bishop or ANY other OFFICER in the Church shall counsel the people to violate ANY of the laws of God, and to SUSTAIN and BUILD UP THE KINGDOM OF THE WORLD, I will justify them, and THE LORD WILL JUSTIFY THEM IN REFUSING TO OBEY THAT COUNSEL.” (J. of D. 12:164)

Most LDS say this in the same breath: “There are No secret combinations today, the Book of Mormon is true.” DC

Must have BOTH the ORDINANCES & PRIESTHOOD: The Key of the Mysteries of the Kingdom, even the Key of the Knowledge of God. Therefore, in the ordinances thereof, the power of godliness is manifest.

And WITHOUT the ORDINANCES thereof, AND the authority of the PRIESTHOOD, the POWER of godliness is NOT MANIFEST unto men in the flesh; For without this NO man can see the face of God. Even the Father, and live. (D&C 84:19-22)

ISAIAH 24:5-The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. D&C 1 Goes on to say: 22-That mine *everlasting covenant might (not yet) be established; 23-That the fulness of my gospel might (going to-but not yet) be proclaimed
Then in D&C 132 the Fulness (Everlasting covenant) is revealed: 1- The principle and doctrine of their having many wives and concubines—2-Behold, and lo, I am the Lord thy God, and will answer thee as touching this matter.
3- Therefore, prepare thy heart to receive and obey the instructions which I am about to give unto you; for all those who have this law revealed unto them must obey the same. 4- For behold, I reveal unto you a new and an *everlasting covenant; and if ye abide not that covenant, then are ye damned; for no one can reject this covenant and be permitted to enter into my glory.
6- And as pertaining to the new and everlasting covenant, it was instituted for the fulness of my glory; and he that receiveth a fulness thereof must and shall abide the law, or he shall be damned, saith the Lord God.
So we see-the fulness of the gospel is the doctrine of their having many wives and concubines.
Apostasy and wickedness will precede the Second Coming happen Officially on October 6, 1890 see Official Declaration-1 and if ye abide not that covenant, then are ye damned; for no one can reject this covenant and be permitted to enter into my glory. (Thus fulfilling D&C 1:15; Isaiah 24:5; 3 Nephi 16:10)

“Therefore, in consequence of the transgressions of my people, it is expedient in me that mine elders should wait for a little season for the redemption of Zion That they themselves may be prepared, and that my people may be taught more perfectly, and have experience, and know more perfectly concerning their duty, and the things which I require at their hands. And this cannot be brought to pass until mine elders are endowed with power from on high. For behold, I have prepared a great endowment and blessing to be poured out upon them, inasmuch as they are faithful and continue in humility before me. Therefore it is expedient in me that mine elders should wait for a little season, for the redemption of Zion.” (D&C 105:9:13)

Watchman servants of the Lords vineyard hearkened NOT unto the LORD: “A parable, that you may know my will concerning the redemption on zion. A certain nobleman had a spot of land, very choice; and he said unto his (LDS) servants: Go ye unto my vineyard, even upon this very choice piece of land, and plant twelve olive-trees; And set watchmen round about them, and build a tower, that one may overlook the land round about, to be a watchman upon the (LDS) tower, that my olive-trees may not be broken down when the enemy shall come to spoil and take upon themselves the fruit of my vineyard. Now, the servants of the nobleman went and did as their lord commanded them, and planted the olive trees, and built a hedge round about, and set watchmen, and began to build a tower.

And while they were yet laying the foundation thereof, they (LDS) began to say among themselves: And what need hath my lord of this tower, seeing this is a time of peace? Might not this MONEY BE GIVEN TO THE $$$ EXCHANGERS? For there is no need of these things. And while they were at variance one with another they became very slothful, and they hearkened NOT unto the commandments of their lord.

The words "conferred for the first time upon several of the elders," would seem at first glance to mean that several were then ordained elders, but taking the complete sentence together, namely, "The man of sin was revealed, and the authority of the Melchizedek Priesthood was manifested, and conferred for the first time upon several of the elders," we naturally conclude that several who had previously been ordained elders, had not yet received the spirit, or power, or authority of their ordinations, but that now for the first time, the authority of the Priesthood having been manifested, it fell upon them.”

be), in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and confer upon you
all the rights, powers, keys and authority pertaining to this office and
calling in the Holy Melchizedek Priesthood, in the name of the Lord Jesus
Christ, Amen."

As to the Lesser Priesthood -- "By (or in) the authority of the Holy
Priesthood I (or we) lay my (or our) hands upon your head and ordain you a
Deacon (or other office in the Lesser Priesthood) in the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints, and confer upon you all the rights, powers and
authority pertaining to this office and calling in the Aaronic Priesthood, in
the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen."

In reference to the form of procedure mentioned on page 136, and that set
forth in this addendum as adopted by the leading authorities of the Church
from the beginning, our beloved and departed President, Joseph F. Smith, when
questioned concerning them, decided, as of record, "It is a distinction
without a difference," and "either will do."
Persons, therefore, who have been ordained in either way hold the right
to officiate in all the duties of their respective offices in the Priesthood.
