Supreme Court declined Monday to hear same-sex marriage appeals from Utah and
four other states, apparently leaving in place lower court rulings that allow gays and lesbians to marry.
In a surprising move, the
high court denied seven petitions from Utah, Oklahoma, Indiana, Virginia and
Wisconsin. Each of those states argued their cases were the best vehicles for
the justices to decide the same-sex marriage question once and for all.
The court did not state a
reason in its order rejecting the cases.

Some faiths, most notably theCatholic Diocese of Salt Lake
City, are not so sure the legal battle is over,
while others, supportive of
gay marriage, are hoping it is… The LDS news release also encouraged Mormons "to be persons of goodwill toward all (SIN), rejecting persecution of any kind based on race,
ethnicity, religious belief or nonbelief, and differences in sexual
orientation."
That sentiment echoed one
offered this past weekend by LDS apostle Dallin H. Oaks during the faith’s
General Conference.
"When our positions do not
prevail," Oaks said Saturday, "we should
accept (SIN) unfavorable results graciously,
and practice civility with our adversaries."

hear the five states’ arguments effectively legalizes the marriages in 11 new
states.
In its silence on the issue
of same-sex marriage, experts said Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court spoke loud
and clear: Let them marry. Gay and lesbian couples in Utah, and 10 other
states, were granted the right to wed Monday after the nation’s high court declined
to hear appeals from five states trying to revive their bans on same-sex
unions.
Utah’s governor and attorney
general sent letters to state and county officials Monday directing that same-sex
marriages be recognized and that all legal benefits associated with marriage be
bestowed on couples who take advantage of this new right.
Republican Gov. Gary Herbert
said he was surprised and disappointed that the U.S. Supreme Court sidestepped
the issue, which in effect legalized same-sex marriages here, but he accepts
the decision.

…She was only six weeks pregnant when she told her first legislative colleague, Sen. Howard Stephenson, a Republican from Draper with whom she served on the revenue and taxation interim committee. Since that day, Stephenson has periodically brought Johnson eggs from his chickens. "I thought it might be helpful for the nutrition of the baby," he explains.
Stephenson is a conservative man. You can hear the hesitation in his voice when he is asked to talk about the potential reaction of his colleagues to Johnson's pregnancy. But he is clear about his own feelings: "I'm not one to judge other people, but I do respect any woman who will carry and bear a child for a childless couple." He adds, "I have my own standards and beliefs, but I don't want to impose them on another person. … I don't want to impose my judgment on Christine or the couple that is receiving the baby."

award for his compassionate approach, according to a story in The Oregonian.

Even though they disagree
with the LDS Church’s position, Mormons who support same-sex marriage may not need to worry
about being barred from entering one of the faith’s temples. Plus,
they are hardly alone.
A new Salt Lake Tribune poll shows that 32 percent of Utah
Mormons believe same-sex couples should be allowed to get state-issued marriage
licenses, and 65 percent say they should be permitted to form civil unions or
domestic partnerships.

Mormons for Marriage Equality, has faced no church
censure for his public support of gay marriage.
Clark, an expert with the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, is married to a woman, has two children,

When members of San Francisco’s LDS Bay Ward want to meet with the bishop, they’ll call Mitch Mayne… On Sunday, Mayne was installed in a highly visible role as the bishop’s "executive secretary," assisting the local LDS leader in virtually every task. Mayne is openly gay — a fact that has created a buzz up and down the Mormon Internet world. He is not the first self-identified gay member to hold a key leadership position within the LDS Church’s all-volunteer clergy and staffing. A Seattle ward (congregation), for example, reportedly had agay counselor to the bishop and in Oakland, Calif., a gay man is on the stake’s high council and is a temple worker…"I was pretty shocked when the bishop [Don Fletcher] asked me," Mayne said this week. "I never expected to be in a leadership role. Idaho Supreme Court allows lawsuit
against Boy Scouts, LDS Church to move forward
16 men say they were sexually abused by scout leaders
in ’70s, ’80s.
Aug 31 2015 - Boise, Idaho • Idaho's highest court has ruled that
the 16
men who say they were sexually abused as youngsters by scout leaders in Idaho filed their lawsuit
on time against the Boy Scouts of America and The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints.
The lawsuit — originally
filed in 2013 — is still pending in federal district court. All but one of the
plaintiffs, identified as John Does, allege they were sexually abused while
attending scouting functions during the 1970s and 1980s.
In their suit, the plaintiffs
argue that scout and church officials knew scout volunteers were dangerous, but
chose not to disclose that information. Instead, each scout leader was
described as a "great guy" and a "friend to whom you can always
turn for advice," according to court documents.

End to ban on gay Scout leaders a change LDS Church could support, activist says

The Boy Scouts of America moved closer Monday to ending its blanket ban on gay
adult leaders, a change that would align the youth organization with the
policies and practices of its largest sponsor: the Utah-based LDS Church.
The BSA's executive committee
unanimously approved a resolution that would let individual Scout units set
their own policies on the long-divisive issue. So church-sponsored units
opposed to the change could maintain the prohibition.
"This is a compromise
the LDS Church will be able to live with happily," said Kendall Wilcox, a
gay Mormon and a member of the interfaith committee of Scouts for Equality that
has been pushing for reforms. "This is good for all of us."
…According to LDS policies in place
since at least 2010, gays and lesbians are eligible to serve in church
assignments, including the Boy Scouts, as long as they don't act on their
attractions.

The 20-year-old man, who was
13 when he was molested in 2007, told jurors Monday that he secretly taped the
Scout leader making a partial confession because it was "a 13-year-old's
word against a Scout leader, an adult."…The files include 16 years of
documents — from 1991 to 2007 — that have not been made public previously. Hale
told jurors they would receive a CD of 100,000 pages to review during
deliberations and, in some cases, would be the first people in the United
States to see the files outside the Scouts and attorneys on the case.
Hale said the Scouts recorded
between 9,000 and 10,000 such files between 1920and 2007, but an attorney for the Scouts put the number at
7,500. The discrepancy wasn't explained.
"The Boy Scouts of America has a long
and sordid history of child sexual abuse committed against
young Scouts committed by Scout leaders and that timeline goes back, the files
show, until at least the 1920s," Hale said.
(I know a lady who was the head secretary of the Boy
Scouts here in Utah that told me she received at least 1-2 calls a day about child sexual abuse here in Utah)

Latter-day Saints and gay rights activists — with political action and
theological pronouncements on one side, protests and pain on the other — the

It has supported
anti-discrimination ordinances in Utah communities, stayed away from the 2012
battles against same-sex marriage in four states, and launched a website to

new tone has been struck. It is now safe for Mormons to talk openly about

In an extraordinary move, the Washington Park LDS Ward in Seattle is opening its arms to Mormon gays and lesbians in the area.
These LDS congregational leaders recently sent a letter to "less-active members within the ward boundaries" inviting them to a church sacrament meeting Sunday, Oct. 19.
The letter acknowledged that participating in worship in the Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints…The letter further assured lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members that their experiences were valuable to the Mormon community…
Mitch Mayne — an openly gay Mormon who helped train local leaders alongside his former bishop, Don Fletcher, in how to welcome LGBT members in San Francisco — is pleased with the Seattle effort and its participants.
He told The Salt Lake Tribune the message of the meeting is as important for straight Mormons as it is for the LGBT community.
Derek Kitchen’s name will live on in law books — along with his partner’s — as three plaintiff couples who brought down Utah’s Amendment 3 and propped up same-sex unions across the nation.
